Some tips to help protect your home from the freezing weather and to keep warm!
1. Clean your Gutters - Clogged gutters and drains can form ice dams, causing water to back up, freeze and possibly seep into the house.
2. Protect the Water Pipes - Pipes cause the most problems during freezing temperatures! Wrap pipes and faucets with weather-resistant material such as insulating foam tubing. You can also open your cabinet doors to allow heated indoor air to circulate around the pipes.
3. Block air leaks. Common leak areas include recessed lighting, window and door frames, electrical outlets, and underneath exterior doors.
4. Insulate, Insulate, Insulate. Don't forget to insulate your attic!
5. Check and clean your furnace - change air filters!
6. Check the ductwork. Make sure all ductwork is well-connected and insulated.
7. Cover the windows with a thermal backed drapery or replace with double insulated window panes.
8. Chimney - have your chimney inspected and cleaned if necessary. Repairs may be needed.
9. Reverse your ceiling fan! How do you know which is the correct way for the winter? For winter, the blades need to turn clockwise. How can we remember this? Hmmmm Fan is winterized, when it turns clockwise. Will that do?
10. Okay....it's not a helpful tip to protect your home from freezing, but it's a great time to remind you to check your smoke alarms!
