The Bedroom - Is it your Safe Haven or your Storage Room?

The bedroom is often an overlooked room when it comes to decorating!  We will spend hours and hours decorating our kitchen, den and dining room.....and then throw boxes, papers, and who knows whatever else into the corners of our bedroom.  The bedroom definitely benefits from "less is more".....here are some ideas and tips for you.......even if you're not ready to SELL!

The bedroom should be a special place....a place away from all the hustle and bustle of the day.  Right off the bat......please don't bring electronics into the bedroom.  Yes, that means the TV and the VCR.  Close the door to the outside world....at least when you go to bed!

Color is an important factor when decorating the bedroom.  Bright red or sunshine yellow are not the colors of choice for the bedroom.  In fact....bright wall colors really shouldn't be used for children's rooms.  Try using soft greens and blues to create a sense of calmness.  Rich colors....spice colors will create more of a cozy warmth feeling.  For example, if you love orange, try using more of a "pumpkin" hue.

Don't forget about the ceiling.  Imagine a cozy room painted in spice colors with throw pillows on the bed for accent colors.....and then the white ceiling!  You can take the wall color and have it mixed at 5-80% and use that for the ceiling.  For higher ceilings, you can use a greater percentage.  This will visually lower the ceiling and make it a little more cozy.

Keep scale in mind too!  If your ceilings are eight feet, you should purchase a low headboard instead of a four-poster bed that almost touches the ceiling and crowds the room.  If your master bedroom is huge you don't want to decorate with "too-small" furnishings either.  The nightstand height should correspond to the bed too.  Beds are getting taller....so should your nightstand.  Plan for storage when you choose a nightstand.  Don't opt for the tiny bedside table.....choose a great nightstand with doors or drawers.  They are a great place for books, magazines and other items.

Consider the "path" or "walkway" in the bedroom......you don't want an obstacle course.  Don't overcrowd the room...especially if it's small.  Try to keep the furniture to what you actually need and then decorate with some great accent pieces.  You don't need much in a small room to make a bold statement.  Try to keep at least three feet between the bed and walls.  If that's not possible, no less than two feet!  Oh, and don't put so many knick-knacks on the dresser and nightstands that they become dust collectors.  Again, less is more on your horizontal services!

If you have room for a sitting area, that's great!  A quiet place to sit with your morning coffee or reading your daily inspirational is such a wonderful gift to yourself.  (Just make sure you make the bed before you sit down!  Not only will you enjoy it more, but you'll appreciate a pretty made bed all day!)

Now here's my favorite part.  I never realized the value....yes, value in luxury linens.  I've heard many people say, "Oh, I would never spend that on sheets!"  The truth is....you may actually spend less money if you buy good quality linens.  I would like to suggest that you purchase nothing but either cotton or linen.....with at least 350 thread count.  These sheets will last for years!  And they feel so luxurious!  I promise!  And don't forget about adding a wonderful cashmere throw on your armchair or your bed!

Don't forget to "decorate" your windows!  Silk panels draped on a beautiful rod just frames that gorgeous window!  If you need a blackout curtain, try putting sheers on the rod behind your curtain to soften the look.

Let's talk about electronics and other items in the bedroom again.  Try to keep cell phones, computers, exercise equipment, crafting projects, bills out of the bedroom.  All they do is remind you of something else that needs to be done!  Okay, you can leave the alarm clock on the night stand....but that's all!

I hope you enjoy this article and if you know of someone who is thinking about buying or selling, please let me know.  Home is important to us......because it's important to YOU!
